Running out of time

well the ride to conquer cancer is just over a month away and my fundraising seems to have stalled at just over $1200, and to be honest I’m starting to get a bit nervous. I have set up a couple of fundraising events May 11th and 25th at Waterloo town square I will be riding my trainer and hoping for donations from passers by, this is usually a fairly successful fundraiser but even on my best day there i only raised around $300.

So once again i reach out to anyone who may read this and ask you to

Waiting…

I have a headache. Not big news on its own, but when I add that I’ve had it nonstop for the last 8 weeks it becomes a bigger issue.

I’ve been going through doctor’s appointments trying to figure out exactly what’s going on. I’ve had a CT scan and so many blood tests I feel like a human pin cushion. The waiting for results is almost unbearable but I’m finally starting to get results: my CT scan came back normal which was a huge relief, but my blood work showed low white blood cells and low platelets, so we

Back to the #paincave

I rode a lot last year. Between leading Ride to Conquer Cancer training rides, the ride itself, and my wife getting 2 new bikes last year, there was no shortage of incentive to ride. I rode over 10,000 km for the second straight year and all that mileage took a toll on me mentally. While my body was up for more riding, my brain decided it was time to rest. I had checked out of my paincave by the end of September

My body has paid for my brain’s need of recovery, so now I feel like I’m back

10,000 Reasons to Donate

So, I did it again: I signed up for my third Ride to Conquer Cancer. The ride has become something I can’t seem to do without. I love the training, the cause, and the event itself. I look forward to the next ride almost as soon as I cross the finish line of the current ride. The 2013 ride means a little something more to me than my previous rides – with a strong fundraising campaign I should surpass the $10,000 mark for my three combined years of fundraising, a goal that seemed out of reach when I signed

#dares4jay

Alright, #makejayhurt has come and gone. Time for a new fundraising plan… #dares4jay here’s the plan: you make a donation and then challenge me to do something stupid (within reason). All dares will be accepted. Want me to break up with someone for you? Make a donation. Wanna see me in a dress? Make a donation. Want me to ride to work with no seat on my bike? Make a donation. Want me to rob a bank? Sorry, not your guy, but make a donation anyway! Be creative, and let’s have some fun… I dare ya.

#MakeJayHurt

February 8th is the Ride to Conquer Cancer Epic Impact Day. On that day, the ride organizers challenge us all to get at least one donation to our ride. Think about that for a second: if all 3,000 or so riders each manage to raise 100 dollars on that day the Princess Margaret would receive 300,000 dollars and that truly would make an epic impact.

This year I have decided to do something a little different. For every $100 raised on that day I will spend an hour on my bike suffering. So, here is your chance to decide

Lost But Not Forgotten

Last Sunday was the second anniversary of my grandfather’s passing from cancer; I can’t believe it’s been that long already. I remember the day like it was yesterday, we all knew it was coming but part of me kept thinking he would somehow beat it - he was Superman to me.

He passed away December 18th 2009, the day after mygrandparents’ wedding anniversary (it was their 68th, I think?). Getting to spend one last anniversary together was his gift to my grandmother. I know how much I miss him, I can’t even imagine how much she must miss him.

Ontario Ride to Conquer Cancer – Day 2

After a hard first day I was relieved to make it back to camp, tired but exhilarated.  I was happy with the day’s ride, I had managed to keep an average of just under 30kph.

First I needed to put my bike away for the night.  The bike holding pen was huge – there had to be room for over 4600 bikes! They had 7 rows all alphabetized to try to keep the bikes organized and easy to find. I was in fairly early so my bike was near the front of one row making it easy to find

Ontario Ride to Conquer Cancer – Day 1

17.5 million! That’s how much money was raised by the 4600 participants of the Ontario Ride to Conquer Cancer, that is a record-setting fundraising event and I am so proud to have been a part of it.

Before I get into the details of the ride I wanted to take a minute to thank some key people: first my wife without whom there is no way I could have made it through both the fundraising and training, second my children who put up with all the training and came out to support me at all my fundraising events, also
